NBC analysts reacted strongly to a new poll showing Donald Trump leading Joe Biden on a number of key issues and traits ahead of the 2024 election.
The poll found voters viewed Trump as stronger on the economy and inflation, as well as more mentally and physically fit to be president.
“We talk about the erosion for Biden and now you start to see it. Look at these numbers,” NBC’s Steve Kornacki said.
This represented a significant reversal from 2020 and underlined concerns about Biden’s handling of the economy and questions about his mental acuity, which have persisted in polling despite an overall narrowing of the Trump-Biden matchup.
In response, the Biden campaign has focused messaging on the economy and released an ad attempting to rebut doubts about the president’s mental sharpness.
“And we actually polled this question in 2020 and it was basically the exact opposite. It was Biden with about a 10-point advantage over Trump,” Kornacki said.
“And again, same with handling a crisis. Biden had the edge over Trump. And how about this? It’s the former president, the current president. We don’t really see matchups like this. Well, now we can measure it,” Kornacki added.
“And again, Trump outpacing Biden on that front. And again, you’ve got to mention this one too. Necessary mental and physical health. We asked this four years ago. It was a wash. It’s now a clear liability for Joe Biden,” Kornacki said.
“So these are all troubling numbers for Biden.”
