China Recruits Taylor Swift to Collect Data on Young Users with Special TikTok Deal

via YouTube

Taylor Swift is partnering with TikTok to promote her new double album “The Tortured Poets Department” which could give the China-owned platform access to millions of user accounts and their data.

TikTok announced an in-app experience featuring discovery points and animated content around the album.

This comes as TikTok users increasingly overshare personal information under hashtags.

Critics argue TikTok data is not truly isolated from China given its parent company ByteDance remains beholden to the CCP, despite the “Project Texas” initiative claiming otherwise.

Former employees said TikTok staff still worked closely with ByteDance after Project Texas.

“Project Texas is an unprecedented initiative dedicated to making every American on TikTok feel safe, with confidence that their data is secure and the platform is free from outside influence,” TikTok stated.

The US Senate is reviewing a bill that could ban TikTok if ByteDance doesn’t sell it within six months due to national security concerns, while TikTok spends millions on US election advertising.

Swift’s promotion may expose more users and their music choices to the platform.
