Metal Detector Enthusiast Makes Astonishing 400-Year-Old Find

via CBC News: The National

A metal detectorist discovered 17th century Polish military armor buried in a field in Poland.

The pieces included a helmet, shoulder armor, and neck protection.

Archaeologists believe the incomplete armor belonged to Polish hussars based on the style.

“Based on the shape of the helmet, we can very likely assess that (the armor) comes from the first half of the 17th century,” a Maria Curie-Skłodowska University archaeologist stated.

“It is a bit corroded, we will only have greater certainty about the date of its creation after conservation work.”

While corroded, conservation work may provide more details on its exact origin and date.

The artifacts will eventually be displayed at a medieval castle housing a history museum.

“The armor is incomplete, the basic element of the cuirass [a piece of armor that covers the torso] is missing, consisting of the breastplate and the backplate, which was used to protect the breast and back, and one of the shoulder pads,” archaeologist Mark Florek said.
