Kamala Harris Wrongly Claims Women’s Basketball Was ‘Not Allowed’ Brackets Until 2022

via NBC

Vice President Kamala Harris made an inaccurate claim about the history of women’s basketball tournament brackets.

She stated that women’s teams were not allowed to have brackets until 2022, but the women’s NCAA tournament has existed since 1982 and long featured brackets.

“Do you know that — OK, a bit of a history lesson — do you know that women were not — the women’s teams were not allowed to have brackets until 2022?” Harris pressed.

“This is the reality, people used to say ‘women’s sports, who’s interested?’ Well if you can’t see it, you won’t be. But when you see it, you realize, ‘Oh,’” she added.

Harris filled out women’s brackets herself in 2021, contradicting her statement.

While a spokesperson said Harris meant to refer to the “March Madness” trademark being extended to the women’s tournament in 2022, her original comments about brackets not existing until this year were factually incorrect.
